The news that Whitney Houston’s filed for divorce from Bobby Brown isn’t so simple, of course. Her friends and family are in battle mode now, prepared to protect her, they tell me, during this fragile time.

Houston has filed for a separation using a Southern California address—and that’s key to what’s going on here. She really lives in both Georgia and New Jersey, where she owns expensive homes. But her divorce filing indicates that she’s lived in California since April. The state requires six-month residency for a divorce, so Whitney will file for the permanent parting next month.

Sources tell me that she has indeed been in California since April, undergoing a total rehab for all her vices and illnesses. “It’s not a regular treatment facility,” says a source who cautions that everyone is concerned about Whitney suddenly being overwhelmed by media.

Still, eagle-eyed readers who’ve examined the divorce filing can see that Houston lists Laguna Hills, California as her address. There are only a couple of facilities that could handle her situation. But in that spirit, all that this column can do is beg paparazzi and tabloid snoops to stay away. It’s in their best interests anyway: a healthy, long living Whitney will only provide much future fodder for you. It will be much more exciting to tell the tale of Whitney Houston’s comeback than her demise.

Houston’s insiders are mostly worried that Brown will interfere with her plans or her progress. It’s reasonable fear. And then there’s Houston’s choice of divorce venue. Georgia might actually be a better state for her since there are 13 different ways to claim a divorce. California, on the other hand, is simply a no fault state, so Houston won’t be able to accuse Brown of any number of infelicities. The good news: sources tell me that the couple signed a pre-nup years ago, so the state of filing may not matter at all.

Well, I told THE LORD that I love Him today.

Ryan Hollins compiled 14 points and nine rebounds for the Bruins (31-6), who advanced to the Final Four for the first time since their national championship season of 1994-95.

But the real reason for UCLA's 11th consecutive victory came on the defensive end.The second-seeded Bruins completely shut down a Memphis squad averaging more than 80 points per game. Heavenly Father, Help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic
last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day and
is rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework,
do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children.

Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested
young man who can't make change correctly is a worried
19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension
over final exams with his fear of not getting his
student loans for next semester.

Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum,
begging for money in the same spot every day (who really ought
to get a job!) is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our
worst nightmares.

Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly
slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping
progress are savoring this moment, knowing that,
based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this
will be the last year that they go shopping together.

Heavenly Father, remind us each day that,

Louise Redden, a poorly dressed lady with a look of defeat on her face, walked into a grocery store. She approached the owner of the store in a most humble manner and asked if he would let her charge a few groceries. She softly explained that her husband was very ill and unable to
work, they had seven children and they needed food. John Longhouse, the grocer, scoffed at her and requested that she leave his store at once.
Visualizing the family needs, she said: "Please, sir! I will bring you the money just as soon as I can." John told her he could not give her credit, since she did not have a charge account at his store.

Standing beside the counter was a customer who overheard the conversation between the two. The customer walked forward and told the grocer that he would stand good for whatever she needed for her family. The grocer said in a very reluctant voice, "Do you have a grocery list?"
Louise replied, "Yes sir." "O.K" he said, "put your grocery list on the scales and whatever your grocery list weighs, I will give you that amount in groceries."

Louise, hesitated a moment with a bowed head, then she reached into her purse and took out a piece of paper and scribbled something on it. She then laid the piece of paper on the scale carefully with her head still bowed.
The eyes of the grocer and the customer showed amazement when the scales went down and stayed down.

The grocer, staring at the scales, turned slowly to the customer and said begrudgingly, "I can't believe it."
The customer smiled and the grocer started putting the groceries on the other side of the scales. The scale did not balance so he continued to put more and more groceries on them until the scales would hold no more.
The grocer stood there in utter disgust. Finally, he grabbed the
piece of paper from the scales and looked at it with greater amazement.
It was not a grocery list; it was a prayer, which said:
"Dear Lord, you know my needs and I am leaving this in your hands."
The grocer gave her the groceries that he had gathered and stood in stunned silence.

Louise thanked him and left the store. The other customer handed a fifty-dollar bill to the grocer and said;
"It was worth every penny of it. Only God Knows how much a prayer weighs."

Rosa Parks, a Baptist laywoman at the forefront of the civil rights movement, died of natural causes Oct. 24 at her home in Detroit. Parks, 92, died just a few weeks shy of the 50th anniversary of her Dec. 1, 1955, arrest for refusing to surrender her seat to a white man on a segregated bus -- an event that changed the nation.
Rosa Parks will always be remembered as a courageous woman who quietly confronted injustice, and in so doing, she changed a nation.

If you've been watching The Factor, you know we are engaged in a battle to protect young children from sexual predators. Many states don't protect children from sexual predators and allow these criminals back on the street to commit these crimes again. There have been despicable cases all across America in which girls and boys have been raped, abused, and even murdered - often by serial sex offenders who had been released by authorities after serving short prison sentences.

Here are just a few of the more egregious examples:

* In Rhode Island, 18-year-old Josh Maciorski was convicted of having sex with a 13-year-old girl, but sentenced to probation. Two years later he molested a 14-year-old girl and served just one year. Then, when he got out, Maciorski raped a 16-year-old girl. His sentence after this third strike - an unbelievable three years in prison.

* In Missouri, 19-year old Darrell Jackson pleaded guilty to repeatedly sexually abusing a little girl, beginning she was just eight. But when Jackson came up for sentencing, a soft judge gave him four months in prison and five years probation.

* In Minnesota, Joseph Duncan stood in front of a judge, accused of molesting a young boy. Despite the fact that Duncan had previously served 16 years for raping another young boy at gunpoint, the judge released him on just $15,000 bail. Duncan promptly skipped bail and headed for Idaho, where he allegedly kidnapped, raped, and killed a 9-year old boy, molested his sister, and killed their family.

These outrageous crimes could have been prevented, which is why I am calling on every state in the union to pass a version of "Jessica's Law." The legislation is named after little Jessica Lunsford, who was just nine when her life was brutally ended by a sexual predator who had previously been convicted of sex crimes against a child. The crime forced Gov. Jeb Bush and the Florida legislature to mandate stiff minimum sentences for child abusers, who had all too often been slapped on the wrist by lenient judges.

There is simply no question that Jessica's Law will save lives, and similar laws need to be instituted in every state. Which is why we at The Factor have been putting pressure on Governors. Now it's your turn. We have investigated all 50 states to determine which ones are tough on sexual predators and which ones treat these criminals with kid gloves. NEW ORLEANS With prayers, tears, hymns and even a handful of humorous T-shirts, more than 1,000 parishioners celebrated Mass in New Orleans' historic Roman Catholic cathedral, the place its archbishop called "the soul of our city."

Emergency workers and soldiers many of them out-of-towners who descended on Louisiana in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina mixed with newly returning residents at St. Louis Cathedral's first Sunday Mass since the hurricane devastated New Orleans more than a month ago.

Some churchgoers shed tears during the service, as the choir and congregation sang hymns about finding shelter in a storm and getting through dark times. The communion hymn contained the lyrics "I am hope for all who are hopeless ... I will bring you home."

"I cried just when thoughts came to me of all the things people are going through," said Michelle Hernandez, 27, of Jefferson Parish , who attended the service with her husband and two children.

"The St. Louis Cathedral is a symbol that really unites all of our city, and this is what we're going to need to move forward," the Rev. William Maestri, the archdiocesan spokesman, said before the Mass began.

Archbishop Alfred C. Hughes spoke of the more than 900 people who perished and offered hope for those who remain to rebuild a region that still has some floodwaters, scattered power outages and wind damage.

"This is indeed an historic moment in the life not only in the church of New Orleans but in the whole city," Hughes said. "The structure which harbors the soul of our city has come back to life."

The church, on Jackson Square in the French Quarter, was bright, as light shining down from the balcony made the altar's gold accents glitter. Candles burned on the altar and brightly lit chandeliers hung from the ceiling painted with religious pictures.

The cathedral's Mass was the latest tentative step in New Orleans' return from Katrina. On Monday, there will be another: many of the area's Catholic schools are reopening, the archbishop said.

One man, standing in the back of the church, said to himself as if in prayer: "Welcome back, New Orleans."

Some parishioners offered a touch of humor, with one wearing a T-shirt that read: "I gave! The house, the car, the job ... Hurricane Katrina."

Hughes said that he hoped New Orleans would rebuild as a community with a stronger moral thread, a community free of racial tension and rampant self-indulgence.

Katie Mello, 30, came to church with her fiance and mother. Mello grew up in New Orleans and now lives in Orlando, Fla., with her fiance. The couple plans to get married at the cathedral in June and returned to the city to bring back relatives who had evacuated.

"This is the heart and soul of the city, so this is where it all starts," Mello said.

The cathedral was originally built in 1727. The first Church of St. Louis lasted 61 years, until it was destroyed by fire. The triple-spired cathedral was rebuilt on the same location. Since then, it has withstood hurricanes and hailstorms.

It was left virtually untouched by Katrina's fierce winds and high waters.

Outside the church, a marble statue of Jesus Christ, with his arm outstretched, had the thumb and forefinger snapped off in the storm. The archbishop said he wanted the fingers reattached only after New Orleans had recovered.

Sunday's Mass was held while relief workers and crews continued to pump out floodwaters from the lower Ninth Ward. Officials expected the pumping to be completed by midweek.

Electricity had been restored to about 29 percent of New Orleans customers and about 98 percent of Jefferson Parish customers, said Chanel Lagarde, a spokesman for Entergy Corp.

As of Friday, the state reported 932 deaths in Louisiana from Hurricane Katrina. Mississippi's death toll was 221.

So if the US government determines that it is against the law for the words "under God" to be on our money,
then, so be it.

And if that same government decides that the "Ten Commandments" are not to be used in or on a government installation, then, so be it.

And since they already have prohibited any prayer in the schools, on which they deem their authority,
then so be it.

I say, "so be it," because I would like to be a law abiding US citizen.

I say, "so be it," because I would like to think that smarter people than I are in positions to make good decisions.

I would like to think that those people have the American Publics' best interests at heart.

BUT, YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE I'D LIKE?

Since we can't pray to God, can't Trust in God and cannot Post His Commandments in Government buildings,

I don't believe the Government and it's employees should participate in the Easter and Christmas celebrations which honor the God that our government is eliminating from many facets of American life.

I'd like my mail delivered on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving &Easter.
After all, it's just another day.

I'd like the US Supreme Court to be in session on Christmas, Good Friday, Thanksgiving &Easter as well as Sundays. After all, it's just another day.

I'd like the Senate and the House of Representatives to not have to worry about getting home for the "Christmas Break." After all it's just another day.

I'm thinking that a lot of my taxpayer dollars could be saved, if all government offices &services would work on Christmas, Good Friday &Easter.

It shouldn't cost any overtime since those would be just like any other day of the week to a government that is trying to be "politically correct."

In fact....

I think that our government should work on Sundays (initially set aside for worshiping God...) because, after all, our government says that it should be just another day....

In a combative hearing pitting an unapologetic Michael Brown against frustrated members of Congress, the former FEMA director defended his handling of Hurricane Katrina and laid the blame for evacuation failures on Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco and New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin.

Brown, testifying under oath for the first time since leaving the Related information on Federal Emergency Management Agency" Federal Emergency Management Agency, said his "biggest mistake was not recognizing" two days before the storm hit Aug. 29 "that Louisiana was dysfunctional." He said it was "not the role of the federal government" to evacuate citizens and accused critics of "Monday morning quarterbacking."

Nagin said singling out Louisiana was "disingenuous." "Obviously, Mr. Brown is under a lot of pressure," Nagin said. "I feel sorry for him."

Brown testified before a special panel of House Republicans looking into the worst natural disaster in the nation's history. Images of thousands stranded in New Orleans without food or water and the sight of decaying bodies horrified people worldwide and prompted calls for congressional action.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, however, called the committee "a sham" and urged members of her party to boycott it. She wants an independent, Sept. 11-style investigation instead. Nevertheless, two House Democrats from hard-hit areas sat in.

A glowering Rep. William Jefferson , D-La., looked on as Brown initially admitted only two mistakes: failing to hold regular media briefings and being unable to persuade Louisiana officials to order a mandatory evacuation. Brown said he found "no one in charge" and "chaos" in Baton Rouge.

"I find it absolutely stunning that this hearing would start out with you ... laying the blame for FEMA's failings at the feet of" local officials, who are Democrats, Jefferson said. "A very weak explanation."

Blanco noted that 90% of New Orleans was evacuated in time and said that Brown is "either out of touch with the truth or reality."

Rep. Gene Taylor D-Miss., whose house was destroyed, rejected Brown's notion that it is always up to state and local officials to handle disasters. He said police, firefighting and other emergency services were decimated in southern Mississippi.

"Maybe the president made a very good move when he asked you to leave your job," he said.

Brown responded that he had lost friends in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing and had smelled decaying bodies. "I don't need you to lecture me," he said, wagging his finger at Taylor.

The charter bus that exploded just south of Dallas on Friday, killing 23 nursing home residents who were being evacuated from Houston, was not registered with the state and should not have been on the road, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Transportation said Sunday.

The bus, operated by Global Limo of Pharr, Texas, became engulfed in fire Friday morning on Interstate 45 in Wilmer, shortly after other motorists reported seeing flames from the right rear of the vehicle. In a horrific scene, the cabin filled with smoke and then flames. That led to a series of explosions, as oxygen tanks used by some of the elderly residents ignited.

Transportation Department spokesman Mark Cross said the bus was not among 10 vehicles that Global Limo has registered with the state. He said the vehicle's state registration had expired in July, meaning that it was illegal for it to be used to help evacuate the Brighton Gardens nursing home in Bellaire as Hurricane Rita threatened the Houston area.

State and federal officials said Sunday that they are examining Global Limo's maintenance records as part of a broad probe into the fatal blaze, which occurred during the unprecedented traffic jam on I-45 created by hundreds of thousands of evacuees.

Keith Holloway, spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board, said Sunday that it could take investigators up to 18 months to determine what triggered the fire. Among the angles being pursued by investigators:

The right rear brake mechanism of the bus. Holloway and Dallas County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Don Peritz said their agencies had received several reports from witnesses that the fire started there. The unidentified driver changed a flat tire on the bus a few hours before the fire, but it's unclear whether the flat was in the same area of the fire or whether the flat had anything to do with the blaze.

The driver's actions. Holloway said federal investigators are reviewing the driver's activities during the 72 hours before the fire to try to determine whether he might have been impaired. Holloway added that the driver had been interviewed by investigators and was cooperative.

Fourteen passengers on the bus were rescued before police and others were forced back by flames, smoke and the explosions, said Peritz, who was at the scene. One of those rescued remained hospitalized Sunday.

"There is nothing to describe this, short of devastating," Peritz said. "The scenes from that bus are life-altering images."

At the end of the rescue effort, Peritz said, one sheriff's deputy could get no farther than the first step in the bus's doorway.

"He could hear people calling for help, but he couldn't see through the acrid smoke," Peritz said, adding that the deputy urged the remaining passengers to move forward toward the door. "Fearing for his own life, he had to move back. It was like a blast furnace in there."

Global Limo pledged to cooperate with investigators.

"Global Limo is deeply grieved over the loss of life," the company said in a statement. "Our prayers are with those affected by this loss."

Global attorney Mark Cooper would not say whether the company knew the bus's registration had expired. He also would not comment on the driver's safety record.

Sunrise Senior Living, a McLean, Va.-based firm that operates Brighton Gardens and 420 other nursing homes, said Sunday that it arranged for the bus evacuation through a separate company, BusBank, a booking agent in Chicago with access to bus companies across the nation.

Sunrise spokeswoman Sarah Evers said Sunrise used BusBank to help evacuate two Louisiana nursing homes during Hurricane Katrina. "It's our understanding that BusBank has a rigorous evaluation process," Evers said. She said two buses were used to help evacuate Brighton Gardens, which had 130 residents.

"The safety of our residents is our primary concern," Evers said. "Unfortunately, we were met with this terrible tragedy."

Because Hurricane Rita hit the Texas coast east of Houston, Brighton Gardens was spared major damage. As families of those killed on the bus were preparing funeral arrangements, the nursing home was preparing to reopen in a few days.

"It's heartbreaking," Evers said.

GALVESTON, Texas Although Hurricane Rita was downgraded to a Category 4 storm Thursday afternoon as it swirled toward the Gulf Coast with sustained winds measured at 150 mph, more than 1.3 million residents are fleeing Texas and Louisiana.

"It's not worth staying here," said Celia Martinez as she and several relatives finished packing up their homes and pets to head to Houston. "Life is more important than things."

An estimated 1.8 million residents or more in Texas and Louisiana were under orders to evacuate to avoid a deadly repeat of Hurricane Katrina .

Traffic on some of Texas' main arteries was at a virtual standstill Thursday morning as people tried to move inland from the coastal areas. Drivers ran out of gas in 14-hour jams or looked in vain for a place to stay as hotels hundreds of miles in from the coast filled up. Others got tired of waiting in traffic and turned around and went home.

Texas authorities were to begin airlifting at least 9,000 people from Beaumont and Houston, including nursing home residents, those without transportation and the homeless, to inland Texas cities. Military troops in South Texas also started moving north and schools, businesses and universities were closed.

"This is a big, dangerous storm. It's a massive storm. It covers half of the Gulf of Mexico. It is still very unpredictable," said R. David Paulison, acting director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency , in a news conference Thursday afternoon.

But preparations were going smoothly, he added.

"The evacuations are going very well," Paulison said. "We still feel we have plenty of time to get those people out of harm's way before this storm makes landfall sometime tomorrow."

As Texas Gov. Rick Perry urged residents along the state's entire coast to begin evacuating well in advance of Rita's predicted Saturday landfall, outer bands of rain began lashing New Orleans on Thursday, the first rainfall since Hurricane Katrina, raising fears that the patched-up levee system could fail and swamp the below-sea-level city all over again.

"I've never seen a storm like this. This is worse than, it looks like it's worse than even Katrina," House Majority Leader Tom DeLay of Texas, who lives 45 miles in from the coast in Sugarland, told FOX News Thursday morning.

In opening remarks on Wednesday, Watt said the caucus wants to show solidarity with the victims "and show that we are working for them."

Scratching some business items from the original agenda, Watt and other members of the CBC set priorities of the 35th annual conference around storm relief and preparation, race and poverty issues. The Congressional Black Caucus is made up of the House and Senate's African-American members. The foundation is the fundraising arm of the caucus.

Watt said he believed race was a factor in the number of people displaced and the slow response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, but that blacks were disproportionately hurt not because of their race but because they "didn't have the means to get away from this disaster."

Watt said he wanted to dispel the misconception that the CBC had linked the federal government's slow response to the race of the overwhelming number of people left helpless by the storm.

"They didn't have the cars, the gas, the locations where they could relocate to, the money to afford hotel rooms or to move away from that disaster. But that's true in every day life also. Poor people, disproportionately African-Americans, Hispanics, Asian-Americans have little capacity to get away from bad things," he said.

President Bush has similarly acknowledged that racial disparities set the stage for the problems left by Katrina, and White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said Wednesday afternoon that the Bush administration is committed to helping all people who were affected.

"Hurricane Katrina did not discriminate in its destructive path and the response did not discriminate either," Perino told FOXNews.com. "The federal government is committed to helping all victims of the hurricane, and the president is working with Congress to develop new initiatives that will help the Gulf Coast region get back on its feet and help those who are in the greatest need of assistance."

At the conference, Watt said that minorities who disproportionately face problems with health care, education and job opportunities are among the issues that the caucus was planning to address this week through forums, meetings and other events.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee , D-Texas, said opportunities are to be found in the "horrible, unspeakable tragedy" resulting from the hurricane, including more attention to the issue of poverty, voting reform and administrative policy.

For instance, she said, "We need to make sure that FEMA has the resources and the leadership" to respond correctly to future disasters.

Officials made a number of other storm-related announcements at the conference, which is being held at the Washington Convention Center. The foundation's spokeswoman, Patty Rice, estimated that 1,500-2,000 guests attended the conference on Wednesday, usually the lightest day on the schedule. She said the conference averages 20,000 visitors annually.

The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation has established a $1 million fundraising goal that will help in the hurricane relief effort. General Mills contributed a $100,000 to the drive.

The caucus also held a candlelight vigil on the Capitol's west lawn Wednesday night to honor storm survivors, and several other storm-related discussions were set into the schedule throughout the week.

Euclid Walker, a 33-year-old businessman from Chicago, said Katrina was on the tip of everyone's lips. With business interests of his own, he said he would like to see some more specific discussions about how the relief effort will enroll minority businesses. The Bush administration has suspended some minority business rules.

"There are all these constraints in place," Walker said.

Velma Charles-Shannon said she's been coming to the conference for the last 10 years. She works in the Agriculture Department's outreach office, managing a program that aims to make sure citizens have equal access to environmental programs offered by the USDA.

She said she expects to have a lot of work as a result of the hurricane she works closely with the Environmental Protection Agency and hopes to get a few tips on how to better handle the crisis from a discussion set for Friday.

"You listen, sometimes, you come away with a wider view of the world," Charles-Shannon said.

Hurricane Katrina was one of the worst natural disasters in our Nation's history and has caused unimaginable devastation and heartbreak throughout the Gulf Coast Region. A vast coastline of towns and communities has been decimated. Many lives have been lost, and hundreds of thousands of our fellow Americans are suffering great hardship. To honor the memory of those who lost their lives, to provide comfort and strength to the families of the victims, and to help ease the burden of the survivors, I call upon all Americans to pray to Almighty God and to perform acts of service.
As we observe a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of Hurricane Katrina, we pledge our support for those who have been injured and for the communities that are struggling to rebuild. We offer thanks to God for the goodness and generosity of so many Americans who have come together to provide relief and bring hope to fellow citizens in need. Our Nation is united in compassion for the victims and in resolve to overcome the tremendous loss that has come to America. We will strive together in this effort, and we will prevail through perseverance and prayer.
Americans are reaching out to those who suffer by opening their hearts, homes, and communities. Their actions demonstrate the greatest compassion one person may show to another: to love your neighbor as yourself. Stories of the grinding poverty among the survivors of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans vividly illustrate what many say is a forgotten truth of modern American life that pockets of desperate poverty still exist in a country of unsurpassed wealth and privilege.

Underscoring that reality, a report by the U.S. Census Bureau released the same week Katrina hit the nation's southeast announced that the national poverty rate rose for the fourth straight year despite continuing growth in production and political rhetoric that the nation's economy is on the upswing.

According to that report, the number of Americans living under the poverty line grew by 1.1 million in 2004 for a total of 37 million people nationwide. That equals 12.7 percent of the total U.S. population. It is the fourth annual increase.

"[Poverty] is a problem in America that hasn't gone away it just went underground for a while, and it shouldn't have," said Sheila Zedlewski, director of the Urban Institute's Income and Benefits Policy Center.

Through images of the predominantly black residents of New Orleans pleading for help, leaving destroyed homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs, America got a wake-up call according to Sheldon Danziger at the National Poverty Center at the University of Michigan.

"People are putting these things together, and it will be interesting to see if the attention of the public stays on this," he said. "As a country we'd like to think we moved beyond it, but in reality, [poverty] is still a substantial problem."

Others caution against putting too much weight into the new numbers, pointing out that they do not reflect the public assistance low-income individuals and families receive, like Medicaid and welfare, and do not distinguished between truly impoverished individuals and those who are temporarily poor.

The poverty rate began to climb in 2000, the year it hit a 26-year low of 11.3 percent of Americans living under the poverty level, according to U.S Census Bureau figures. That was the lowest point since 1974, when the number was 11.2 percent. The highest point of poverty in recent times was in 1993 at 15.1 percent. Before that, was in 1983, at 15.2 percent.

In 2004, according to the latest study, the poverty rate among African Americans remained the same at 24.7 percent. Hispanics also saw no change in their poverty rate at 21.9, while whites saw an increase, from 8.2 percent to 8.6 percent. Asian Americans experienced the only decrease, from 11.8 percent to 9.8 percent.

The poverty rate among American families remained at 10.2 percent of the population in 2004. The Office of Budget and Management defines a family of two adults and two children with a median household income of $19,157 or less as living in poverty; or a family of two with no children, making $12,649 a year.

Median household income went unchanged in 2004, according to the census bureau, at $44,389. Blacks continue to have the lowest median income among all ethnic and racial groups, making $30,134 annually.

Wages earned among Americans, however, declined in 2004. For men over 15 working full-time, year round, the real median earnings declined 2.3 percent from 2003, to $40,798. For women with similar work experiences, wages declined by 1 percent to $31,223.

And while unemployment has gone down from 5.5 percent in August 2004 to 4.9 percent in August this year, unemployment among blacks is still the highest in the country, at 9.6 percent in August compared to 4.2 percent for whites and 5.8 for Hispanics.

In New Orleans, where blacks make up 67 percent of the population, 27 percent of the residents are living below poverty level according to a recent study by Total Community Action, Inc., a public advocacy group based in New Orleans.

But some warn that the new census bureau figures may not be an ideal measure, given that they do not take into account the impact of public assistance on a household, or recent tax cuts and child tax credits. Others say the poverty rate had been in steady decline since the early 1990's and see the recent increases as the tail end of the 2000 recession.

"It's a bit unfortunate to link the hurricane with the issue of poverty in this country," as though there has been no reduction in poverty since the 1980's, said Rey Hederman, senior policy analyst for the Heritage Foundation.

Since a high point in 1983 the poverty rate for the U.S has been on a decline, aside from the four years following the brief recession in 1989 and the most recent hike, according to the Census Bureau.

Like other economic analysts, Hederman believes the growth in productivity in the U.S economy will eventually produce more jobs and higher incomes for workers.

But so far, Hederman admits, that hasn't happened.

"We've got strong productive growth but wages have been relatively stagnant. It's a bit of a paradox as to why it hasn't happened sooner," said Phillip Swagel of the American Enterprise Institute, who blames, in part, the Internet bust six years ago.

Nonetheless, he calls today's economy "the most golden era for productivity growth" in more than 50 years.

"In the short term, it means that firms have been able to produce more without hiring more people," Swagel continued. "But in the long term, it will mean that wages and income will go up. It takes time for that relationship to take hold."

But on Wednesday, the Congressional Budget Office announced that hurricane's damage to the southeast could reduce national economic growth by nearly a percent at time when forecasters were hoping for a three to four percent increase by the end of the year. It also expects a loss of 400,000 jobs in the labor market.

Some say that inner cities that have never fully recovered from past economic recessions will no doubt be the hardest hit.

"I think for the last 25 years, we have had an economy where most of the gains have been concentrated in a small percentage of the workforce," said Danziger. "[The] rising tide has not lifted all boats, the economy has shifted so that a smaller portion of the population gets the increases, and the rest is simply happy to have jobs that experience no wage increase or income increases."

According to the recent Total Community Action study, poverty rates have remained stagnant in New Orleans in the last 40 years and even without the near total destruction of the city, have been the highest in the nation.

"It would be ironic that it would take a disaster like this to focus [national attention] on this,"

Rep. Mel Watt, R-N.C., and member of the Congressional Black Caucus , told FOXNews.com, "Every area of our lives these disparities exist and we have tried to focus on them all year."

Minority populations left behind in many cities often suffer from bad schools and are at a real disadvantage compared to their suburban middle class and affluent counterparts, say experts.

"The poverty differences by education, by race, by central city versus the suburbs, are long standing," said Danziger, who also said that by leaving New Orleans' most disadvantaged, immobile residents behind the hurricane "clearly brought that into stark contrast."

The Urban Institutes Zedlewski admits that over the last several years more resources have been focused on the symptoms of poverty poor education and healthcare.

"If you look at the long haul it is true progress has been made," she said, adding that more needs to be done, particularly in the African American community, regarding single motherhood, the high rate of incarcerated males and investing in adult education.

Swagel, who recently left his job as chief of staff for the White House Council of Economic Advisors , believes the current administration has put into place policies notably tax cuts that have stimulated growth and are benefiting middle and lower income families the most.

"I would say our policies are on the right track," he said. "They are working in the right direction, and we should not reverse course when things are improving."

Watt doesn't buy the tax cut stimulus scenario. "As soon as this President came in and passing these massive tax cuts, [the poverty rate] turned and went in the opposite direction," he said. "This administration is about supporting people of higher income and it makes no bones about it."

Meanwhile, thousands of displaced people from New Orleans are looking for jobs, and trying to begin new lives in places like Houston and Baton Rouge. Poverty advocates hope that in the long term, available education and job training opportunities, as well as the higher wages that have been promised by economists, aren't out of reach.

NEW YORK People living in the path of Hurricane Katrina's worst devastation were twice as likely as most Americans to be poor and without a car factors that may help explain why so many failed to evacuate as the storm approached.

An Associated Press analysis of Census data shows that the residents in the three dozen hardest-hit neighborhoods in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama also were disproportionately minority and had incomes $10,000 below the national average.

"Let them know we're not bums. We have houses. Our houses were destroyed. We have jobs. It's not our fault that we didn't have cars to leave," Shatonia Thomas, 27, said as she walked near New Orleans' convention center five days after the storm, still trapped in the destruction with her children, ages 6 and 9.

Money and transportation two keys to surviving a natural disaster were inaccessible for many who got left behind in the Gulf region's worst squalor.

"It's a different equation for poor people," explained Dan Carter, a University of South Carolina historian. "There's a certain ease of transportation and funds that the middle class in this country takes for granted."

Catina Miller, a 32-year-old grocery deli worker who lived in the Ninth Ward, a poverty-stricken New Orleans enclave created in the 1870s by immigrants who were too poor to find higher ground, said she certainly would have liked to have left the city before the hurricane hit.

"But where can you go if you don't have a car?" she asked. "Not everyone can just pick up and take off."

Jack Harrald, director of the Institute for Crisis, Disaster and Risk Management at George Washington University in Washington, said emergency planners have known for years that the poverty and lack of transportation in New Orleans would be a significant problem, but the government spent more time and money preparing itself rather than communities for disaster.

"All issues were known," said Harrald, whose institute had been scheduling a series of emergency planning community meetings through a partnership with the University of New Orleans. "But it was still a work in progress. ... There's enough blame to go around for everybody."

The AP analysis showed:

Median household income in the most devastated neighborhood was $32,000, or $10,000 less than the national average.

Two in 10 households in the disaster area had no car, compared with 1 in 10 in nationwide.

Nearly 25 percent of those living in the hardest-hit areas were below the poverty line, about double the national average. About 4.5 percent in the disaster area received public assistance; nationwide, the number was about 3.5 percent.

About 60 percent of the 700,000 people in the three dozen neighborhoods were minority. Nationwide, about 1 in 3 Americans is a racial minority.

One in 200 American households doesn't have adequate plumbing. One in 100 households in the most affected areas didn't have decent plumbing, which, according to the Census, includes running hot and cold water, a shower or bath and an indoor toilet.

Nationwide, about 7 percent of households with children are headed by a single mother. In the three dozen neighborhoods, 12 percent were single-mother households.

"It's the same people who don't have the wherewithal to get out of Dodge," explained National Guard Lt. Col. Connie McNabb, who was running a medical unit at the besieged convention center in New Orleans.

The disparities were even more glaring in large, urban areas. One of the worst-hit neighborhoods in the heart of New Orleans, for example, had a median household income of less than $7,500. Nearly three of every four residents fell below the poverty line, and barely 1 in 3 people had a car.

"I didn't have much in there," said Deanna Harris, a 57-year-old unemployed New Orleans resident, "but it was mine.

"Now, this is what I've got," she said, patting a plastic bag.

The hardest hit victims of Mississippi have much the same story.

In one Pascagoula neighborhood, where 30 percent of residents are minorities, more than 20 percent live in poverty.

In Alabama, where Katrina wasn't as severe, one of the hardest hit areas was a downtown Mobile neighborhood, where the median household income is barely $25,000 and one of every four residents lives below the poverty line.

"There's not a lot of interest in this issue, except when there's something dramatic," said Carter, the South Carolina historian. "By and large, the poor are simply out of sight, out of mind."

David Perez has spent $200,000 rescuing victims of
Hurricane Katrina.
He said saving just one life is
"worth a million dollars."

Fed up with what he says is the government's slow
response in rescuing residents along the hurricane-ravaged
Gulf Coast, a California businessman is taking action.
Over the weekend, David Perez launched an effort to
evacuate New Orleans — on his own. Using $200,000,
Perez chartered a Boeing 737. Upon landing in Louisiana,
he unloaded much-needed supplies he had purchased
at a local Costco and later reloaded the plane with 86 weary hurricane victims.

"These people need to have their kids in school and get their feet back on the ground," Perez said. "They have gone through devastation."
The group headed to San Diego, where Perez has organized a contingent of local families to open up their hearts and homes as temporary shelters.
Welcome Relief
Perez's efforts are greatly appreciated by those who have lost everything. "I don't have nowhere else to go," said hurricane victim Norman Chatman. "I'm looking for a new start, a new beginning."
Perez said he's just doing what the government failed to do to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. "It's a joke," he said. "Everyone took a vacation from this disaster."
Perez was there for every step of the journey, handing out boarding passes and helping with luggage. When the plane touched down in San Diego, tears of devastation finally turned to tears of joy.
As chairman and chief operating officer of Carmel Valley-based Surge Global Energy, Perez said he's counting on one of the company's drilling operations to pay his credit card bills for the relief effort — or else he will have to take out a second mortgage on his San Diego home. If all goes well, he might arrange for additional evacuation flights.
"If I save one life — just one life — and I make one person's life better on this trip," he said, "it's worth a million dollars to me."

Fed up with hearing about agonizingly slow efforts to get relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, San Diego businessman David Perez chartered a Lear jet from Carlsbad, Calif., to Baton Rouge on Saturday morning. He brought with him outrage, a few members of the media, a few bags of relief supplies and promises to do much more for the still-suffering victims of the nation's worst natural disaster.Perez said he plans to bring another chartered jet, this one full of storm victims, Sunday to San Diego, where dozens of families have offered their homes as temporary shelter.
But the oil executive and his rogue mercy mission got off to a difficult start Saturday.
Perez barked pleas and orders into his cell phone in the lobby of Carlsbad's McClellan-Palomar Airport, making frantic phone calls before departing at 9:45 a.m. Saturday."I need a tanker of gas to the Baton Rouge Sheriff's Department!" he told his assistant, Ryan Lipkovacious, while scribbling notes outside the airport lobby. "They're all out of fuel! Their SWAT team can't move!"Perez pledged Friday to pay to fly relief supplies to Louisiana and to bring evacuees back to San Diego County. Frustrated at the slow pace of the relief efforts he had seen on television, the oil company executive contacted Jewish philanthropic organizations looking to donate to the effort.But he said that when National Guard officials couldn't tell him who was in charge, he decided to get much more personally involved. Frenetically working his cell phone Saturday morning, Perez juggled calls to emergency managers, state senators and hospital officials in Louisiana. He made calls to people around the country that he had enlisted to contribute to his wildcat relief effort.At times, his anger and lack of sleep came to a boil."FEMA never showed up," he told a few reporters at the Carlsbad airport, his voice rising. "How did I get these phone calls? Who am I? Hurricane Recovery Assistance

President George W. Bush has declared major disasters for impacted areas in Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, and Alabama. The U.S. Department of Labor is supporting efforts in these communities in coordination with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the agency that is actively managing federal assistance to these affected communities in an effort to expedite response efforts and save lives.

I can't believe what I am hearing on television. A reporter is mad because there is a building on fire and there is no one from the fire department to put it out. Come on now. They have to make choices. Right now it's a choice between putting out a fire where no lives are in danger, or go out and help rescue people who are still trapped. NOPD and state police are doing the best they can.

Some local websites are estimating that approximately 1,500 people are still stuck on roofs in St. Bernard parish.

The police, firemen, EMTs, doctors, and others who are trying to rescue strangers, are truly some of the finest people in America. They are the only people who are courageous enough to stay and face danger.

If you do research on New Orleans, you will see that it is a beautiful but very dangerous city, even prior to Katrina. There are some legit people who need help, but some are just taking advantage.

What is happening in New Orleans is an embarrassment to everyone who is from that area. I expected better. It is a tough time, and everyone must ban together to help your neighbor out, not kill or rob them.

Mayor Nagin of New Orleans is doing the best he can with what he has. It's not his fault. He is begging for help. We have to pull together. All we have left is each other.

Family evacuated New Orleans

I just heard from our friend Rob. He and his family evacuated New Orleans. They have eight feet of water in their home and an unknown amount of water at his business. He is en route to Monroe, Louisiana. He is trying to drop off his wife and kids with family. From there, he will head to Baton Rouge where they are trying to set up a temporary office.

I talked to my husband very briefly. I hear the stress in his voice. I don't know what to do. Rob has also lost everything and only has $9 in his pocket. He has a wife and three children, all under the age of seven.

My sister's friend is heading to Franklinton, LA to rescue her aunt and uncle. They called her stating that theyre trapped in their home by trees, with no water and food. Along with her husband, she left from Atlanta with chainsaws to try and get them help.

My grandfather called. He got 13 feet of water in his house. It is a total loss.

My cousin called. He and his family rode out the storm at my uncle's house. Their house is sitting on their neighbor's house. They have lost everything. They have three very young children.

I can't sleep or eat. My mind just goes a mile a minute. I am scared. I am scared for my loved ones who are in Slidell. My daughter Britta asked me today when she is going home. She talks about her birthday party that all of her friends from school were going to come to. I still have not told her that she probably won't have a birthday party this year.

Anyone reading this: Please stay away from Slidell. There is no food, water, or shelter. Conditions are very dangerous. Slidell police have run out of gas and are on foot. Its worse than you can imagine.

Thousands more bedraggled refugees were bused and airlifted to salvation Saturday, leaving the heart of New Orleans to the dead and dying, the elderly and frail stranded too many days without food, water or medical care.

No one knows how many were killed by Hurricane Katrina's floods and how many more succumbed waiting to be rescued. But the bodies were everywhere: hidden in attics, floating among the ruined city, crumpled on wheelchairs, abandoned on highways.

The dying went on at the convention center and an airport triage center, where bodies were kept in a refrigerated truck.

U.S. Troops in Iraq, Afghanistan to Help With Katrina Relief

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates The U.S. Air Force will send 300 airmen home from Iraq and Afghanistan to help their families cope with emergencies on an air base devastated by Hurricane Katrina in Biloxi, Miss., a spokesman said Saturday.

The airmen, all based at Keesler Air Force Base, will begin flying home over the next two weeks, said Air Force Capt. David Small, spokesman for U.S. Central Command Air Forces in Qatar .

The group includes airmen who were scheduled to rotate home in September and others whose deployments will be cut short.

"Those who weren't scheduled to go home, we're going to send them home anyway to take care of their families and the hurricane damage," Small said.

Keesler, just off the beach in the Gulf Coast city of Biloxi , suffered a direct hit from the hurricane and much of its housing and other infrastructure were wiped out. Small said most personnel and families on the base had been moved to temporary shelters. "Everything was under water," he said.

Master Sgt. James Riley, 39, said he only left Keesler six days ago for duty on the U.S.-run al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar. Now, Riley is finishing his paperwork to return to Mississippi.

"I've been called back to assist with recovery efforts and to assist my family," said Riley, whose wife and three children have taken shelter in a school on the base.

U.S. authorities want Keesler returned to operation to handle hurricane relief flights, Riley told The Associated Press.

"It's going to be the heart, the pulse of the relief effort," Riley said. "We've got a vested interest in getting back there and getting things running. That's where our homes are, that's where our families are."

The storm wiped out 90 percent of the homes on the base, with officers' quarters closest to the waterfront faring worst, Riley said.

Small said he had heard no reports of storm-related deaths on the base. Keesler houses both active duty airmen and Air Force reservists.

The decision to send Keesler-based airmen home was made by top Air Force officials with the support of Brig. Gen. Allen G. Peck, the deputy commander of coalition air forces in the Iraq and Afghanistan theaters. Peck is based at al-Udeid Air Base.

Small said the 300 airmen will be leaving many bases in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as surrounding countries in Central Asia and Arab states of the Persian Gulf. Some will be flying home on commercial airlines, he said.

Small said the Air Force would ensure the early departure would not damage the Air Force's war-fighting capabilities, which include ground attack sorties, cargo and fuel deliveries, air-to-air refueling and troop transport.

"We're making sure the unit commanders here can still conduct their missions without the folks from Keesler," Small said. "There are about 18,000 airmen in the theater, so we can pick up the slack."

A statement on Keesler's Web site described damage to the base as "severe enough that we are unable to leave our shelters until Thursday at the earliest." Base residents were waiting for recovery teams to clear debris and repair damage before Keesler would be reopened.

Air Force personnel serve shorter, more frequent deployments in the war theaters than do U.S. Army and Marine forces. Air Force deployments average about four months but can extend to a year, Small said. By contrast, Army deployments last from 10 months to a year, and Marines are sent for about seven months.

Keesler houses the U.S. Department of Defense's weather school, the Air Force's second-largest medical facility, and handles training in high-tech command-and-control and computer networking.

U.S. military officials have said there are no plans for a large-scale shifting of U.S. troops from Afghanistan or Iraq to assist recovery efforts.

The commander of the Louisiana National Guard's 256th Brigade Combat Team, based in Baghdad, had asked that his 3,700 soldiers be sent home a few weeks early to deal with the crisis. The 256th already was preparing to go home later this month when Katrina struck.

Lt. Gen. John Vines, commander of Multi-National Corps-Iraq, said Friday that only U.S. troops whose family members were injured or killed by the hurricane may be allowed to go home early. Others will have to stay in Iraq and finish their missions, he said, otherwise remaining troops in Iraq would be at greater risk.

Emergency leave is being handled on a case-by-case basis, said Lt. Col. Steve Boylan, a spokesman for the U.S. command in Baghdad.

"We are not redeploying units/personnel for the hurricane relief efforts as all the units/personnel here are required for the ongoing security and stability operations happening here in Iraq," Boylan said in an e-mail message.

victims. Had these images and stories not been shown and told it is our belielf that these
people would still be waiting for assistance. The government doesnt like to be shown that they are lacking they don't want to appear weak and non responsive after all we have RE ELECTIONS here in the USA. How fast was the world trade center response?. Food for thought.

That's all I have the energy to say at this time.
There is a greater force at work here (hint: read book of revelations), but we will save that for a later time.

Screaming the Lord's Prayer

NEW ORLEANS — Above the din, a woman is screaming the Lord's Prayer as if heaven can no longer hear silent pleas.
"And lead us not into temptation," she bellows hoarsely to the unhearing throng, "but deliver us from evil ..."
But temptation is everywhere in this crippled city. And so, it seems, is evil.
Five days after Hurricane Katrina came and went, necessity has forced police officers to become looters; gangs hijack the boats of volunteers who have come to rescue them. Naked babies wail for food as men get drunk on stolen liquor.
A walk through New Orleans is a walk through hell — punctuated, it must be said, by moments of grace.
Along the debris-choked Mississippi River, pharmacist Jason Dove watches as people scramble in the parking lot of the downtown convention center for cases of airlifted water and shakes his head. "We created this Frankenstein," he says. "It's showing how fragile this society is."
In the world-renowned French Quarter , armed residents hide behind ornate iron gates like prisoners in a frilly jail. Historic markers on Napoleonic-era houses share billing with signs that warn: "You loot, we shoot!"
When water began rising in predominantly black neighborhoods, many jumped to the conclusion that the levee had been purposely breached to preserve the old city and its hotels.
"F... the Quarter!" a black man shouts as he walks beneath a balcony where a resident lounges with a cold beer as generator roars away in the otherwise deathly night silence. "They always protect the Quarter."
Katrina's winds have left behind an information vacuum. And that vacuum has been filled by rumor. There is nothing to correct wild reports that armed gangs have taken over the convention center. That two babies had their throats slit in the night. That a 7-year-old girl was raped and killed at the Superdome.
One officer calls these human cattle yards "lawless countries unto themselves."
After several days in the street with little water and less food, people around the convention center began imagining that the storm was somehow a vehicle for ethnic cleansing. One black man insists that authorities want everyone corralled into the convention center — not to facilitate an orderly evacuation, but so police can ignite the gas and blow them up.
"They want us all crazy so they can shoot us down like dogs!" a woman shouts.
Police point their guns at the crowds and tell them to back off. The people take it as aggression. But when you look into these officers' eyes, there is real fear.
Officer Kirk LeBranche cowered on the roof of his flooded hotel in New Orleans East for three days as the nighttime hours became a shooting gallery.
"Anarchy and chaos," he says. "People are desperate."
Officers deserted their posts. Many of them lost everything but their lives to the storm, and they refuse to gamble those on a seemingly lost city.
Katrina has not just robbed people of their homes. It has taken their dignity.
On a sidewalk crowded with children and the elderly, a woman pulls down her pants and squats behind a potted plant. A passing man averts his eyes.
"Thank you," she says. "I'm just doing what I've got to do."
At the convention center, where thousands have camped in the streets since Monday awaiting buses out of the city, the despair feeds on itself like a voracious beast.
When National Guard helicopters attempt to land supplies in the parking lot, waiter Bob Vineyard joins a self-appointed ground crew attempting to set up a safe perimeter. The crowd surges past them with an almost feral intensity, and the chopper crew is forced to take off.
The soldiers drop cases of water and self-heating meals from 10 feet in the air. Many of the bottles burst on impact, the precious water left to evaporate in the hot sun.
"We would have had a whole helicopter full of food if you had stayed back!" Vineyard shouts at the crowd, with disgust. "Hey, y'all. I did my best."
Carl Davis wonders why someone can't just truck the food in and hand it out in an orderly fashion. Rather than taking comfort in the food drops, he finds the process insulting, demeaning.
"They're giving it to us like we're in the Third World," he spits. "This should never have happened. It didn't happen in Iraq, and it didn't happen in the tsunami."
Down the street, anxious tourists idle on a bandstand across from Harrah's casino, which has become a National Guard and police staging area. Jill Johnson of Seskatchewan says police don't want them there, but she and others worry they would be easy prey at the convention center.
"We're appalled," says Johnson, who tried to buy a car to get out of town. "This city is built on tourists, and we're their last priority."
Nearby, Cassandra Robinson huddles in the loading area of a local store where a small community has formed. Her niece, Heavenly, who turned 1 year old the day before the storm, dozes in Robinson's arms, weakened by a diet of water and mashed-up potato chips.
Robinson says people are behaving like animals because they are being treated as animals.
"We're not born thieves," she says, as neighbors heat food over a trash-can fire. "We were born Christians."
Thursday night, a prayer session begins at one end of Convention Center Boulevard and spreads to the other. Please, they implore, let there be no more rioting.
The next morning, someone — Robinson does not know who — appears with fresh, cold milk. And instead of fighting over it, able-bodied adults step back and allow the children and the elderly to be nourished first.
Across the city, people have banded together, creating pockets of civility amid the chaos.
The management of the French Quarter's Hotel Le Richelieu fled two days after the storm. Those left behind — cooks, maids and security officers — organized to ration supplies, establish foraging teams and set up a schedule for guard duty.
Days after the storm, the kitchen somehow manages to keep serving hot food. Guests have taken to calling the place the Hotel Rwanda.
"It's a jungle and it's dog-eat-dog," hotel security guard Glenn King says as he rests his hand on the butt of a revolver at his side. "When you see the police doing the same thing the looters are doing, it tells me you're going to have to fend for yourself."
Some find ways to flee. New Orleans resident Robert Jordan and eight family members are on their way to Birmingham, Ala., but he delays his departure more than two hours to help plug a fellow refugee's punctured tires. He uses goods he "borrowed" from a nearby auto parts store.
"Bye-bye, French Quarter!" he shouts as his three-vehicle caravan leaves the protective walls of the Richelieu parking lot. "Be safe."
But Jordan's sentiments seem wishful thinking.
Before dawn Friday, the French Quarter is rocked by explosions. A few miles down river, railroad tanker cars erupt in a tornado of flame, showering a flooded neighborhood with soot and casting a pall of black over the city — as if New Orleans isn't already under one.
A police officer says snipers fired on workers sent in to fight the fire. They stood down and watched it burn.
Randall Davis walks from his home in the French Quarter and sits on a bench, staring at the inferno through reddened eyes, his head swimming with apocalyptic thoughts.
"It's becoming less numbing each day," he says, as the fire rages. "It's unfortunate that I'm getting used to anarchy and chaos when this was once a vital, vibrant community of people who looked out for one another. And it's degraded to this."
Davis laughed when he heard a congressman suggest that the city should be abandoned to the swamp waters from which it was born. But he isn't smiling as he stares into the smoke-shrouded sunrise.
"If this is what it's like when we even have a semblance of society," he says with a sigh, "maybe we shouldn't build it back."

BURBANK, Calif. — A shaken and emotional Ellen DeGeneres said her 82-year-old aunt had to quickly evacuate her home in Pass Christian, Miss., as Hurricane Katrina headed toward the Gulf Coast.
"My aunt has lost everything, she has nothing," DeGeneres told AP Radio Wednesday. "She grabbed four pictures out of her house. She's lost her entire life."
DeGeneres, who was born in Metairie, La., said her childhood was filled with weekends at her aunt Helen Currie's home, just over the state line from New Orleans
"It's where I grew up every weekend. I spent all my childhood there," she said. "Pass Christian ... is just gone. There's not one building left — no church, no nothing."
Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour has said towns such as Pass Christian, Gulfport and Long Beach are "simply not there" and compared the damage to Hiroshima.
Meanwhile, DeGeneres said she is talking to networks about organizing a telethon to raise funds for hurricane victims similar to what was done after the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
Katrina telethons are already taking shape, featuring artists including Wynton Marsalis and Green Day .
"Whether you have family there or not, it's a devastating situation," the 47-year-old actress-comedian said.
The third season of her syndicated talk show, "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," starts Tuesday.

NEW YORK — It began, fittingly enough, with jazz from New Orleans natives Harry Connick Jr. and Wynton Marsalis. But "A Concert for Hurricane Relief," a heartfelt and dignified benefit aired on NBC and other networks Friday night, took an unexpected turn thanks to the outspoken rapper Kanye West.
Appearing two-thirds through the program, he claimed "George Bush doesn't care about black people" and said America is set up "to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off as slow as possible."
The show, simulcast from New York on NBC, MSNBC, CNBC and Pax, was aired live to the East Coast, enabling the Grammy-winning rapper's outburst to go out uncensored.
There was a several-second tape delay, but the person in charge "was instructed to listen for a curse word, and didn't realize (West) had gone off-script," said NBC spokeswoman Rebecca Marks.
Immediately after the airing was over, Marks said it was undetermined how much, if any, of the tirade would be included in the taped West Coast feed three hours later.
The host was NBC News' Matt Lauer, who invited viewers to contribute to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund by phone or on the Web. Some 18 presenters performed musical numbers or gave information on the tragedy's huge scope.
Comedian Mike Myers was paired with West for a 90-second segment that began with Myers speaking of Katrina's devastation. Then, to Myers' evident surprise, West began a rant by saying, "I hate the way they portray us in the media. If you see a black family, it says they're looting. See a white family, it says they're looking for food."
While allowing that "the Red Cross is doing everything they can," West — who delivered an emotional outburst at the American Music Awards after he was snubbed for an award — declared that government authorities are intentionally dragging their feet on aid to the Gulf Coast. Without getting specific, he added, "They've given them permission to go down and shoot us."
After he stated, "George Bush doesn't care about black people. Please call _" the camera cut away to comedian Chris Tucker.
Concluding the hour a few minutes later, Lauer noted that "emotions in this country right now are running very high. Sometimes that emotion is translated into inspiration, sometimes into criticism. We've heard some of that tonight. But it's still part of the American way of life."
Then the entire ensemble performed "When the Saints Go Marching In."
In a statement, NBC said, "Kanye West departed from the scripted comments that were prepared for him, and his opinions in no way represent the views of the networks.
"It would be most unfortunate," the statement continued, "if the efforts of the artists who participated tonight and the generosity of millions of Americans who are helping those in need are overshadowed by one person's opinion."
Friday's program was the first of several TV benefits planned through next weekend.
NBC and the five other major commercial broadcast networks, along with PBS, plan to unite next Friday for a special. The same night, BET will air a benefit. And on Saturday, Sept. 10, the MTV networks will air a special.

NEW ORLEANS — The situation in New Orleans was nearing rock bottom Friday as thousands of National Guardsmen and women armed with food, water and weapons streamed into the hurricane-ravaged city to bring relief to the suffering multitudes and take back the streets from the looters and armed vigilantes.

"The cavalry is HERE and will continue to arrive," one Guardsman said.

President Bush arrived in Mobile, Ala., around 11:15 a.m. EDT Friday to tour the devastation. He will visit New Orleans later in the day.

"We have a responsibility to help clean up this mess," Bush said after meeting with the leaders of some Gulf Coast states. "It's as if the entire Gulf Coast were obliterated by the worst kind of weapon you can imagine."

He also said the $10.5 million in emergency funds being appropriated by Congress is a small down payment on recovery costs to help the people of New Orleans and other areas hit by Katrina back on their feet. The Senate passed that bill Thursday while the House followed suit on Friday

And "we are going to restore order in the city of New Orleans," the president added.

NEW ORLEANS — Violence and chaos disrupted the evacuation efforts in New Orleans Thursday as thousands of National Guard troops poured into the Crescent City to boost security in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina .
"This is a desperate SOS," New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said outside the New Orleans Convention Center, where corpses lay in the open and he and other evacuees complained that they were dropped off and given nothing — no food, no water, no medicine.
"We are out here like pure animals. We don't have help," the Rev. Issac Clark, 68.
Meanwhile, Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco said everyone is concerned for the dead who cannot be picked up until all of the living are found and brought to safety.
"It's a difficult thing for family members who are worried about them. We're worried about them too," she said Thursday. "Frankly, our situation is so difficult we actually believe there will be thousands [dead] but we don't have an official count."
Fights and trash fires broke out at the hot and stinking Superdome and anger and unrest mounted across New Orleans as the first of nearly 25,000 refugees being sheltered at the Superdome began to arrive in Houston, Texas. Thousands of people rushed from nearby hotels and other buildings, hoping to climb onto the buses taking evacuees from the arena.
One ambulance official overseeing the airlift rescue operations said a gunshot was fired at a military helicopter over the Superdome before daybreak.
"We have suspended operations until they gain control of the Superdome," said Richard Zeuschlag, head of Acadian Ambulance, which was handling the evacuation of sick and injured people from the building.
The military continued the ground evacuation without interruption, said National Guard Lt. Col. Pete Schneider.
More than 28,000 National Guard members have been deployed to the Gulf Coast region in what may be the largest military response to a natural disaster.
The Bush administration intends to seek $10 billion to cover immediate relief needs in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and lawmakers decided to break off their summer vacation to approve the request by the weekend.
But across New Orleans, the rescuers themselves came under attack from storm victims hungry, desperate and tired of waiting.
"Hospitals are trying to evacuate," said Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Cheri Ben-Iesan, spokesman at the city emergency operations center. "At every one of them, there are reports that as the helicopters come in people are shooting at them. There are people just taking potshots at police and at helicopters, telling them, 'You better come get my family.'"
Nagin ordered virtually the entire police force to abandon search-and-rescue efforts and stop thieves who were becoming increasingly hostile.
Volunteers with boats hoping to help rescue those still stranded on rooftops in New Orleans were told to stand down by the Federal Emergency Management Agency after shots were fired.
"The truth is, a terrible tragedy like this brings out the best in most people, brings out the worst in some people," said Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour on NBC's "Today" show. "We're trying to deal with looters as ruthlessly as we can get our hands on them."
President Bush will tour the hurricane devastated Gulf Coast region on Friday and has asked his father, former President George H.W. Bush, and former President Clinton to lead a private fund-raising campaign to help victims recover.
Bush will survey the Alabama and Mississippi coast by helicopter, then go on to New Orleans. He also will tour some locations on the ground.
The president on Thursday warned that looters, price gougers, insurance fraudsters, those taking advantage of charity and others will face the maximum consequences for their actions.
There will be "zero tolerance of people breaking the law during an emergency such as this," Bush said in a live interview at the White House with ABC's "Good Morning America." "I've made that clear to our attorney general."
Chaos at the Superdome
Evacuees who had taken refuge in the Superdome were waiting hours to get onto buses that were taking them 350 miles away to the Houston Astrodome, which can hold 27,000 people. Conditions in the Superdome had become horrendous: There was no air conditioning, the toilets were backed up, and the stench was so bad that medical workers wore masks as they walked around.

NEW ORLEANS, LA, United States (UPI) -- Martial law was declared in New Orleans midday Tuesday as the city continued flooding from at least two levees damaged by Hurricane Katrina.
WWL-TV, New Orleans, which evacuated its studios earlier, reported airlifts of sandbags had been ordered as water flooded along the city`s landmark Canal Street. No one but emergency personnel was being allowed into the city, whose two airports were under water. Looting was reported.
Mayor Ray Nagin said bodies have been seen floating in floodwaters, although neither city nor Louisiana state officials had issued a preliminary death toll.
Nagin said the city`s Twin Span Bridge is "totally destroyed" and that 80 percent of the city is underwater. New Orleans is 6 feet below sea level, and reliant on levees to hold back water from Lake Ponchartrain.
He also predicted there would be no electricity in the city for four to six weeks. Natural gas leaks were also reported throughout the city, CNN reported.

Tuesday, August 30, 2005 — The American Red Cross has mobilized thousands of volunteers to respond in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which completely devastated parts of Louisiana and left at least 55 people dead.

The Red Cross plans to send close to 2,000 volunteers in the area to begin the initial response in the next few days.

“Volunteers are truly the lifeblood of the American Red Cross, and we are calling on them now by the thousands to help support relief efforts in Louisiana and other states after Katrina,” said Pat McCrummen, American Red Cross disaster spokesperson. “We are looking at a long term, very significant response to this storm.”

The Red Cross is mobilizing every available resource from across the country including thousands of staff and volunteers to respond to this storm. Red Cross volunteers and donors are neighbors helping neighbors.

Volunteers are already on the ground staffing shelters for tens of thousands of people in five states—Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Texas.

The Red Cross is launching the largest mobilization of resources for a single natural domestic disaster, in part because the extent of the damage is so widespread over a large geographical area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin including sending nearly 1,900 staff and volunteers into the field in the next few days, and sending more than 250 Emergency Response Vehicles (ERVs) out to provide food and water to affected residents.

BILOXI, Miss. — Joy Schovest swam for her life, fighting Hurricane Katrina's storm surge and its angry winds, brushing aside debris and floating cars to reach higher ground.
Behind her, at least 30 of her neighbors in the Quiet Water Beach apartments were dying, trapped in their crumbling two-story building as it was swept away with much of this Mississippi coast community Monday.
"We grabbed a lady and pulled her out the window and then we swam with the current," said Schovest, 55, breaking into tears. "It was terrifying. You should have seen the cars floating around us. We had to push them away when we were trying to swim."
The tragedy at the apartment building represented the biggest known cluster of deaths caused by Katrina. Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour said the death toll in the county where Biloxi is located could be as high as 80.
The only remaining evidence of the Quiet Water Beach apartments was a concrete slab surrounded by a heap of red bricks that were once the building's walls. A crushed red toy wagon, jewelry, clothing and twisted boards were mixed in with the debris. The four-lane road that separated the building from the beachfront was buckled and covered with rubble.
"This is all that's left of my house," said nearby resident Jack Crochet, 56, shaking his head and looking at the rubble. "It's never going to be the same. It's over."
The storm also inflicted a punishing blow to Biloxi's waterfront casinos, down the beach from the apartment building. The Grand Casino gambling barge and a second casino broke away from their moorings, ending up in a ditch now filled with water and slot machines.

"Basically, it's a total loss, and that's in excess of $100 million to replace what was lost here," Bernie Burkholder, president and chief executive of Treasure Bay Casino in Biloxi, said as he walked around the casino property.
People examined the slot machines to see if they still contained coins, and looting broke out in other areas of Biloxi.
"People are just casually walking in and filling up garbage bags and walking off like they're Santa Claus," said Marty Desei, owner of a Super 8 motel in Biloxi. "I haven't seen anything like this in my whole life."
The lucky ones in the Quiet Water Beach apartment building and other vulnerable areas of Biloxi described a scene of pandemonium as they fled the rising water. When asked why they ignored evacuation orders, some said they did not think the storm would be that bad; others would not give a reason.
Apartment tenant Landon Williams, a 19-year-old construction worker, said he and his grandmother and uncle ran from the crumbling building as the storm hit. As they later swam through the swirling water and debris, "we watched the apartments disintegrate. You could hear the big pieces of wood cracking and breaking apart."
He said the winds flung two-by-fours and drywall.
"I lost everything. We can't even find my car," he said. "I'm looking through this wreckage to see if I can find anything that's mine. If not, I'm moving on. I think I'll move on to North Carolina and do some work over there. I can't take it here anymore — not after this."
Williams said six of his neighbors in the building who remained behind also survived. "As the second story collapsed, they climbed onto the roof and part of it floated away and they floated to a house that made it," he said.
Paul Merritt, 30, surveyed the damage in Biloxi with his 18-year-old wife and their 3-month-old son, Brandon. He said the water rose to the second story of his townhouse, which is less than a block off the beach.
"I've never seen destruction of this magnitude," Merritt said. "You see this stuff on TV and you hope that it never happens to you. Everything's gone."
Ida Punzo rode out the storm with a friend and two neighbors in her 130-year-old home on the beachfront in Biloxi. The first two floors of the old house were almost completely gone, but she survived.
"It was a miracle," Punzo said. "This place is held together with God's spit. We're not supposed to be alive."

NEW ORLEANS — Rescuers along the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast pushed aside the dead to reach the living Tuesday in a race against time and rising floodwaters, while New Orleans sank deeper into crisis, with Louisiana's governor ordering storm refugees out of this drowning city.
Two levees broke and sent water coursing into the streets of the Big Easy a full day after New Orleans appeared to have escaped widespread destruction from Hurricane Katrina .
An estimated 80 percent of the below-sea-level city was under water, up to 20 feet deep in places, with miles and miles of homes swamped.
"The situation is untenable," Gov. Kathleen Blanco said. "It's just heartbreaking."
The number of dead was still unclear, a day after Katrina slammed the Gulf Coast with 145-mph winds. But one Mississippi county alone was believed to have lost as many as 80 people — 30 of them from a beachfront apartment house that collapsed under a 25-foot wall of water. And Louisiana said many were feared dead there, too, making Katrina one of the most punishing storms to hit the United States in decades.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said hundreds, if not thousands, of people may still be stuck on roofs and in attics, and so rescue boats were bypassing the dead.
"We're not even dealing with dead bodies," Nagin said. "They're just pushing them on the side."
The flooding in New Orleans grew worse by the minute, prompting the evacuation of hotels and hospitals and an audacious plan to drop huge sandbags from helicopters to close up one of the breached levees. At the same time, looting broke out in some neighborhoods, the sweltering city of 480,000 had no drinkable water, and the electricity could be out for weeks.
With water rising perilously inside the Superdome, Blanco said the tens of thousands of refugees now huddled there and other shelters in New Orleans would have to be evacuated.
She asked residents to spend Wednesday in prayer.
"That would be the best thing to calm our spirits and thank our Lord that we are survivors," she said. "Slowly, gradually, we will recover; we will survive; we will rebuild."
All day long, rescuers in boats and helicopters pulled out shellshocked and bedraggled flood refugees from rooftops and attics. The Coast Guard said it has rescued 1,200 people by boat and air, some placed shivering and wet into helicopter baskets. They were brought by the truckload into shelters, some in wheelchairs and some carrying babies, with stories of survival and of those who didn't make it.
"Oh my God, it was hell," said Kioka Williams, who had to hack through the ceiling of the beauty shop where she worked as floodwaters rose in New Orleans' low-lying Ninth Ward. "We were screaming, hollering, flashing lights. It was complete chaos."
Frank Mills was in a boarding house in the same neighborhood when water started swirling up toward the ceiling and he fled to the roof. Two elderly residents never made it out, and a third was washed away trying to climb onto the roof.
"He was kind of on the edge of the roof, catching his breath," Mills said. "Next thing I knew, he came floating past me."
Across Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, more than 1 million residents remained without electricity, some without clean drinking water. An untold number who heeded evacuation orders were displaced and 40,000 were in Red Cross shelters, with officials saying it could be weeks, if not months, before most will be able to return.
Emergency medical teams from across the country were sent into the region and President Bush cut short his Texas vacation Tuesday to return to Washington to focus on the storm damage.
Federal Emergency Management Agency director Mike Brown warned that structural damage to homes, diseases from animal carcasses and chemicals in floodwaters made it unsafe for residents to come home anytime soon. And a mass return also was discouraged to keep from interfering with rescue and recovery efforts.
That was made tough enough by the vast expanse of floodwaters in coastal areas that took an eight-hour pounding from Katrina's howling winds and up to 15 inches of rainfall. From the air, neighborhood after neighborhood looked like nothing but islands of rooftops surrounded by swirling, tea-colored water.
In New Orleans, the flooding actually got worse Tuesday. Failed pumps and levees apparently sent water from Lake Pontchartrain coursing through the streets. The rising water forced hotels to evacuate, a hospital to move patients to boatlift patients to emergency shelters, and drove the staff of New Orleans' Times-Picayune newspaper out of its offices.
Officials planned to use helicopters to drop 3,000-pound sandbags into the breach, and expressed confidence the problem could be solved. But if the water rose a couple feet higher, it could wipe out water system for whole city, said New Orleans' homeland security chief Terry Ebbert.
In devastated Biloxi, Miss., areas that were not underwater were littered with tree trunks, downed power lines and chunks of broken concrete. Some buildings were flattened.
The string of floating barge casinos crucial to the coastal economy were a shambles. At least three of them were picked up by the storm surge and carried inland, their barnacle-covered hulls sitting up to 200 yards inland.
The deadliest spot yet appeared to be Biloxi's Quiet Water Beach apartments, where authorities said about 30 people were washed away. All that was left of the red-brick building was a concrete slab.
"We grabbed a lady and pulled her out the window and then we swam with the current," 55-year-old Joy Schovest said through tears. "It was terrifying. You should have seen the cars floating around us. We had to push them away when we were trying to swim."
"What I'm authorized to say now is we expect the death toll to be higher than anything we've ever seen before," said Jim Pollard, civil defense spokesman for Mississippi's Harrison County, which includes Biloxi and Gulfport.
Asked if the toll could be higher than Hurricane Camille in 1969 when 131 were killed in Mississippi and 40 went missing, Pollard referred back to his statement and said, "That would be higher wouldn't it?"
Said Biloxi Mayor A. J. Holloway: "This is our tsunami."
Looting became a problem in both Biloxi and in New Orleans, in some cases in full view of police and National Guardsmen.
On New Orleans' Canal Street, which actually resembled a canal, dozens of looters ripped open the steel gates on clothing and jewelry stores, some packing plastic garbage cans with loot to float down the street. One man, who had about 10 pairs of jeans draped over his left arm, was asked if he was salvaging things from his store.
"No," the man shouted, "that's EVERYBODY'S store!"
Outside the broken shells of Biloxi's casinos, people picked through slot machines to see if they still contained coins. "People are just casually walking in and filling up garbage bags and walking off like they're Santa Claus," said Marty Desei, owner of a Super 8 motel.
Insurance experts estimated the storm will result in up to $25 billion in insured losses. That means Katrina could prove more costly than record-setting Hurricane Andrew in 1992, which caused an inflation-adjusted $21 billion in losses.
Oil prices jumped by more than $3 a barrel on Tuesday, climbing above $70 a barrel, amid uncertainty about the extent of the damage to the Gulf region's refineries and drilling platforms.
By midday Tuesday, Katrina was downgraded to a tropical depression, with winds around 35 mph. It was moving northeast through Tennessee at around 21 mph, with the potential to dump 8 inches of rain and spin off deadly tornadoes.
Katrina left 11 people dead in its soggy jog across South Florida last week, as a much weaker storm.

Looking for a little worship in your workout? At a Florida gym with plans to become a nationwide chain, you can get fit and get God simultaneously.

At the Lord's Gym in Clermont, Fla., faith is just as important as form, and exercise classes include gospel spinning, "praisercise" and "yo-god," all done to new-agey Christian music.

"We do see it as a growing trend," Peter Sikowitz, editor in chief of Men's Fitness magazine, told Fox News. "There are a lot of Christian gyms in Florida and California it definitely has a chance of catching on. There are a lot of Christian businesses ... more and more people are getting back to their spirituality."

The gym's Christian theme isn't hard to find in the décor. According to Men's Fitness, "a wall by the Stairmasters is covered with a floor-to-ceiling mural of 'Daniel in the Lion's Den' ... the steps are each inscribed with a different line from John 3:16 ... and the juice bar sells smoothies with names like 'Land of Milk and Honey,' 'John the Baptist' and 'Joseph's Surprise,' in two sizes -- David and Goliath."

The hottest fitness trend over the past few years has been yoga -- an activity its followers find both physically and mentally beneficial, some to an almost spiritual level. But Lord's Gym owner Paul Sorchy says yoga's popularity is not what spawned his facility."Yoga is not what my focus was about. It was about keeping the focus on my Lord Jesus ... We don't call it yoga. It is called yo-god," Sorchy told Fox News.

But don't throw on a leotard at this gym -- tight-fitting clothes are not allowed.

"We do have a dress code," said Sorchy. "We are simply asking folks to be considerate. They don't want to be revealing too much flesh or skin."

Sorchy says the wardrobe restrictions are meant to provide a "comfortable environment."

"We don't have the G-string bound Barbies. We ask them to wear a T-shirt that's long enough to cover their bottom."

Greg Snowton, who told Men's Fitness he typically visits the gym three times a week, says the lack of sports bras and bare bellies don't bother him.

"I'm a Christian, but that's not everything that drew me here. I just like the wholesomeness of the place. Believe me, I enjoy looking at pretty women in tight Lycra as much as the next guy, but that can take away from the focus of a workout. All I know is that I work out just as hard here as I do at other gyms, but when I leave here, I feel much better about myself."

Sorchy says the most popular items seen on the backs of those sweating in his gym are Christian-themed T-shirts.

There's "a small level of competition behind who can have the best Christian shirt," he said, adding that the Lord's Gym shirt, which reads: "His pain, your gain. Bench press this!" is the most popular Christian selling T-shirt of all time.

Some might accuse Lord's Gym of using the Lord for commercial reasons; the gym's logo depicts a buff Jesus doing a push-up with a cross on his back inscribed "The Sins of the World." But Sorchy stands by his business.

"We are simply offering a vehicle for those who don't want to be in a secular gym where they would have that meat-market mentality," he said.

Pope John Paul II , the bold, humanitarian leader of the Roman Catholic Church, has died at 84, the Vatican announced in an e-mail Saturday.

"The Holy Father died this evening at 9:37 p.m. (2:37 p.m. EST) in his private apartment. All the procedures outlined in the apostolic Constitution `Universi Dominici Gregis' that was written by John Paul II on Feb. 22, 1996, have been put in motion."

The announcement came from papal spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls and was distributed to journalists via e-mail.

The pope died after suffering heart and kidney failure following two hospitalizations in as many months. Just a few hours earlier, the Vatican had said he was in "very serious" condition but responded to members of the papal household.

Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the Vatican No. 2 official, immediately led a tearful crowd of 70,000 people in St. Peter's Square in prayers for the dead pope as Rome observed a moment of silence.

Some people held their hands to their heads in disbelief — on other faces, tears rolled uncontrollably. The pope's apartment windows were still lit up following the announcement of his death.

Attorney Johnnie Cochran has died in California after a long illness.

Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr., the masterful attorney who gained prominence as an early advocate for victims of police abuse, then achieved worldwide fame for successfully defending football star O.J. Simpson on murder charges, died this afternoon. He was 67.

Cochran died at his home in the Los Feliz section of Los Angeles of an inoperable brain tumor, according to his brother-in-law Bill Baker. His wife and his two sisters were with him at the time of his death.

Cochran, his family and colleagues were secretive about his illness to protect the attorney's privacy as well as the network of Cochran law offices that largely draw their cache from his presence. But Cochran confirmed in a Sept. 2004 interview with The Times that he was being treated by the eminent neurosurgeon Keith Black at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Long before his defense of Simpson, Cochran was challenging the Los Angeles Police Department's misconduct.

From the 1960s on, when he represented the widow of Leonard Deadwyler, a black motorist killed during a police stop in Los Angeles, Cochran took police abuse to court. He won historic financial settlements and helped bring about lasting changes in police procedure.

His clients weren't always black — he unsuccessfully represented Reginald Denny, the white trucker beaten by a mob during the 1991 riots that followed the verdicts of not guilty in the trial of police officers charged with assaulting Rodney King. Instead of arguing, as he often did, that police had been brutal on the job, Cochran contended that the trucker's civil rights had been violated because police didn't do their jobs when they withdrew from a South Los Angeles intersection of Florence and Normandie, where rioting was fierce and Denny was beaten.

By the time Simpson was accused of murder in 1994, Cochran was "larger than life" in the city's black community, said Kerman Maddox, a political consultant and longtime Los Angeles resident. After Simpson, that profile would expand, earning him new admirers as well as new detractors who considered him a racially polarizing force.

His successful defense of Simpson against charges of murdering his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and Ronald Lyle Goldman, a waiter and friend of Nicole's, vaulted him to the rank of celebrity, beseeched by autograph-seekers and parodied on "Saturday Night Live" and "Seinfeld."

His name was invoked by movie characters, one of whom boasted in the 1997 film "Jackie Brown" that his lawyer was so good, "he's my own personal Johnnie Cochran." Ever aware of his public image, he delighted in the attention and even played along, showing up in the occasional movie or TV show in a cameo role as himself.

Resplendently tailored and silky-voiced, clever and genteel, Cochran came to epitomize the formidable litigator, sought after by the famous and wealthy, the obscure and struggling, all believing they were victims of the system in one way or another.

He could figure out how to connect with any jury, and in his most famous case, the Simpson trial, he delivered to the jurors an eloquent, even lilting closing argument. He famously cast doubt on the prosecution's theory of the case saying, "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit." The line referred to Cochran's overall assessment of the prosecution's evidence, but it most evoked the moment during the trial when Simpson appeared to struggle to put on what were presumed to be the murderer's bloody gloves — one of which was found at the murder scene, the other outside Simpson's house.

As a result, the line is often quoted as "If the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit"-an adaptation that even Cochran made in his 2002 book, "A Lawyer's Life."

"He has a real gift for communicating with people," Erwin Chemerinsky, a Duke University law professor who offered analysis of the Simpson trial, said in late 2004. "Obviously you saw that in the O.J. case.… I think you could have given that case to a lot of talented lawyers and O.J. would have been convicted."

Cochran inspired law students and attained a level of stardom rare for a lawyer and even rarer for a black lawyer. One of his most important legacies was the transforming effect of a black man attaining that level of success.

"Clients of all races are now no longer hesitant to retain black lawyers to represent them in significant cases," said Winston Kevin McKesson, a black criminal defense attorney in Los Angeles. "That was not the case 25 or 30 years ago. We couldn't even get African Americans in our community to trust us. He's a historic figure."

However, the Simpson criminal trial defined Cochran's career for better and for worse. While it made him a household name and offered him access to virtually every high-profile criminal case, it also changed his life "drastically and forever," he wrote in "A Lawyer's Life." "It obscured everything I had done previously."

More galling and perplexing to him was the criticism that rained down after the Simpson verdicts. Though many legal experts marveled at Cochran's skill, a parade of critics — TV pundits and newspaper columnists, California's then governor, the Republican Pete Wilson, and even his own co-counsel, Robert Shapiro — decried a legal strategy that put the competence and character of the Los Angeles Police Department on trial.

"Not only did we play the race card, we dealt it from the bottom of the deck," Shapiro said in a national TV interview after Simpson was acquitted by a jury of nine African Americans, two whites and one Latino. (All but two were women.)

During the trial, Cochran and the rest of the defense team excoriated criminalists for sloppy work that compromised blood evidence and claimed that police officers prejudged Simpson. Cochran and his "Dream Team", as the defense attorneys were known, revealed that police Detective Mark Fuhrman, who collected key evidence in the case, had a history of making racist remarks.

Everything about the Simpson case came to personify the excess of Los Angeles. A combustible combination of murder, sex and race, the extravagantly lengthy trial was carried live on television, making it arguably the first high-profile reality TV show.

When it was finally over, the jury acquitted Simpson, but many in the public did not. A Times poll indicated that half the American public disagreed with the verdict. And the majority believed the defense used the issue of race inappropriately to help free a defendant whose controversial saga began unfolding when he fled police in a nationally televised slow-speed freeway chase.

Chemerinsky said Cochran did nothing more than discharge his duty as a zealous advocate in defending Simpson. "I think Johnnie Cochran did a superb job," Chemerinsky said. "He ultimately put the LAPD and the racism of the LAPD on trial, and that worked with that jury."

Cochran spent two post-trial memoirs trying to dispel the criticism.

"The charge that I could convince black jurors to vote to acquit a man they believed to be guilty of two murders because he is black is an insult to all African Americans," he wrote in "A Lawyer's Life."

It wasn't, Cochran contended, that he believed the police had conspired to frame Simpson. It was more that their racism led them to a "rush to judgment" and a willingness to "adjust the physical evidence slightly," he wrote.

"He got an awful rap in the white community after the Simpson trial," said Stuart Hanlon, a white attorney who was a longtime criminal defense collaborator with Cochran. "All he did was do a great job as a lawyer — which is what we're supposed to do — and beat some inept prosecutor. For him to get vilified for it just shows the racism in our community. I really think if OJ's lawyer had been white, that wouldn't have happened.… If I had done that trial and won, no one would hate me."

Ironically, up to that time, Cochran had spent most of his life not as a racial polarizing force but as the integrator, the black man gliding easily through white conference rooms, dinner parties, and neighborhoods.

In a September 2004 phone interview with the Times, Cochran said, he still would have taken the case knowing it would change his life. "I thought it was the right thing to do," he said.

Cochran continued to support Simpson's version of his activities the night his former wife and Goldman were found knifed to death outside her Brentwood townhouse.

"I still believe he's innocent of those charges," Cochran said in the September 2004 interview. "Even after all this time."

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Two strong earthquakes rocked Indonesia's eastern province of Maluku on Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, the local geological agency said.

The first quake of magnitude-6.4 struck just about 40 minutes after midnight; the second, measuring 6.0 magnitude, came at 7:40 a.m., said Benny Sipollo of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency office in Ambon.

Both quakes were centered under the Banda Sea (search), just over 150 miles northwest of Ambon, about 140 miles beneath the earth's surface.

Ambon, about 1,600 miles east of Jakarta (search), is the capital of the archipelagic province of Maluku.

A quake of magnitude 6 can cause considerable damage if centered near residential areas.

Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago nation, is prone to seismic upheavals due to its location on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire."

On Friday, a magnitude-5.9 quake hit near Banda Aceh, the capital of the Aceh Province, which was ravaged by the Dec. 26 earthquake and tsunami that killed at least 174,000 in the Indian Ocean basin.

In case you haven't heard, the net is buzzing with talk of
blogging and RSS. Once the province strictly of people who
got a kick out of publishing online diaries, and later of
political and social commentarists, blogs and RSS are being
adopted by the internet marketing community.

This is the hot new trend for 2005. The word "blog" was
actually the most searched word of the year for 2004, and
2005 promises to be the year of the blog.

So what is all the fuss about? Well, especially with the
increasing restrictions on email marketing, including ISP
blocking of mail amounting to estimates of 40% of all email
never getting delivered, marketers began to look for new
avenues to get their message out. Enter blogs and RSS.

Delivered straight to a user's desktop, the content of an
RSS feed is unfiltered by anyone. Users can subscribe and
unsubscribe anonymously, with the click of a mouse, and
have no fear that their personal information will be
shared. RSS is "pull" technology, meaning that the user
asks for it, in contrast to email, which is often unasked
for, and thus is often "push" technology.

Blogs, which are usually publicized by way of an RSS feed,
among other venues, are the current darlings for the search
engine spiders. Search engines love blogs, because they
are full of content, are frequently changing, are devoid of
"flash", graphics, and other distractions, and are full of
outgoing links.

If you know anything about search engine optimization, you
know that those are the characteristics that should you
strive
for when optimizing a conventional page for the search
engines.
The pages in a blog are that way by their very nature, and
thus attract the search engine spiders.

Why do marketers love blogs? Numerous reasons.

They are simple to create and maintain. They afford the
opportunity to publish links to other sites, and to the
interior pages of other sites. Their popularity with human
visitors makes them natural targets for traffic. Their
constantly changing content attracts the search engine
spiders, which then follow the links that they find, and
index the pages of other websites.

Many savvy internet marketing experts have suggested that
the best way to capture an audience of potential customers
is to provide them free information, either through a
"content site" that does little direct selling, or through
publication of an informative email newsletter that gives
free information and at most employs a "soft sell" when
endorsing products.

A blog is the perfect blend of the two. It has often been
suggested that the best way to start an online business is
with a free newsletter, which allows you to develop your
"list". While a blog doesn't develop your "list" in quite
the same way, it does afford you the opportunity to develop
a loyal following among your readers, which accomplishes
much the same purpose as having a "list".

Whether you announce or endorse a product through an email
list or a blog, you are announcing it to people who want to
hear what you have to say. Your blog readers are probably
more eager, in many cases, than are readers of your mass
emails.

I could go on and on about the merits of blogs. If you are
promoting any product or service online, you owe it to
yourself to check out what can be done with blogs and RSS.
